The Sturgis Buffalo Chip, the legendary campground and entertainment venue famous for its free-to-campers concerts during the Sturgis Rally, today announced that the annual Motorcycles as Art event will return to the Buffalo Chip’s 7,000 square foot Exhibition Center in 2012 with an all new exhibit titled, Come Together, The Sprit of Born-Free. This exciting new exhibit features a collection of one of a kind custom motorcycles and artwork. Open daily to the public with free admission from August 4th through the 10th, 2:00pm to 10:00pm.

Presented by the Sturgis Buffalo Chip and curator, famed photographer Michael Lichter in conjunction with Born-Free bike show creators Grant Peterson and Mike Davis, this year’s highly anticipated exhibit will be like no other in the history of Motorcycles as Art. Come Together, The Sprit of Born-Free celebrates freedom of expression, contemporary motorcycle design and the vision of today’s most innovative artists and custom bike fabricators. The Born-Free ride-in bike show that began in Southern California in 2009 as an event that brought together like minded individuals with a love for choppers, old motorcycles and the culture that surrounds them, has now grown into something much larger. Harley-Davidson Names CEO Keith Wandell Board Chairman, Increases Dividend

MILWAUKEE, Feb. 7, 2012 - Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) President and Chief Executive Officer Keith E. Wandell will assume the additional duties of Chairman of the Company's Board of Directors, effective immediately. Wandell was named Chairman by Board action.
"Keith is a transcendent leader who has done an outstanding job of guiding Harley-Davidson in a period of extraordinary challenge and transformation," said Barry K. Allen, who has served as the Company's non-executive Chairman since 2009.

"When Keith joined Harley-Davidson as CEO in 2009, the Board believed it essential for him to be able to devote his full energy to strategies to move the business forward, without the distraction of Board leadership responsibilities," said Allen. "With the Company's tremendous progress under Keith's leadership over the last three years, the Board believes the time is right to recombine the roles of Chairman and CEO."
Additionally, the Board named Richard I. Beattie as Lead Director. Beattie has been an outside director of Harley-Davidson since 1996. As Lead Director, Beattie will head the oversight and monitoring activities of the Board that would otherwise be performed by a non-executive Chairman.
Wandell joined Harley-Davidson in May 2009 as the Company's first outside CEO since 1981. Beginning in fall 2009, the Company embarked on a major new strategy to focus exclusively on the Harley-Davidson brand and transform the Company's approach to product development, manufacturing and the retail experience.
"I am grateful for the confidence the Board has placed in me, since I first came to Harley-Davidson, to work with everyone in this great organization to build a bright future for our company," Wandell said. "On behalf of the directors and all our stakeholders, we express our deep gratitude to Barry for his Board leadership and we look forward to his continued guidance and contributions as a director."
In other action, the Board approved a cash dividend of $0.155 per share for the first quarter of 2012. This represents a 24% increase over the Q4 2011 dividend ($.125) and a 55% increase over the Q1 2011 dividend ($.100). The dividend is payable March 2, 2012, to the holders of record of the Company's common stock on February 21, 2012.

Here Come The Judge

After unveiling the newest addition to its ever increasing line-up of bikes earlier this year in New York City, Minnesota-based Victory Motorcycles let a bunch of wild and woolly moto-journalists have a go at putting the 2013 Victory Judge through its paces. For that purpose, the journalists were invited to tony Palm Springs, CA, for a cloudy February day of unbridled riding through the dry – yet slightly freezing – high desert.

The mountainous scenery along Highway 74 to Idyllwild was the perfect backdrop to what turned out to be a fun ride on an equally fun and powerful motorcycle. Equipped with Victory’s by now famous 106-inch Freedom engine and 6-speed transmission, the Judge is blessed by long gearing and an extremely wide power band, making the uphill ride to just below the snow line a veritable orgy of leaning into hairpin curves and plenty of torque across all gears when heading into the straight-aways.

Although the marketing gurus have slated the Judge to compete in Harley-Davidson’s Fat Boy market, the bike seems to be more than just a cruiser, but also more than just a sport bike. A sport cruiser might be a good moniker, but maybe, after the bike has become available at US dealers in April, that is something that you, the reader, can be the judge of.

The 12th Annual V-Twin Expo

This weekend marked the 12th annual V-Twin Expo at the Cincinnati Duke Energy Center. The three-day event has become the world’s largest V-twin dealer show with thousands of dealers from all over the world in attendance to see the latest parts, products and accessories from the best of American motorcycle aftermarket.

This year’s Expo was packed with truly innovative new parts and products for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. If the products on-hand were serious, the dealers attending the Expo were equally dedicated to doing serious business. Everyone involved in the American custom cruiser and bagger scene filled the massive convention center to check out where the industry is going and to attend the many informative seminars held throughout the weekend.

New for this year, a “Road Iron Revue” of wild custom baggers took center stage and drew a lot of attention. The V-Twin Expo is also the home of our annual “Excellence in Motorcycling Awards” to honor those individuals, companies and products and that go the extra mile in design and innovation.

We rushed back from the Expo to bring you the latest and greatest new parts and products that we found in our “New Product Showcase”. This stuff runs the gamut from go-fast parts and dress-up goodies, to engines, wheels and brakes, you name it. Look for it soon in the pages of V-Twin News.

Stripped-Down, Narrow Styling with Less Chrome and Retro Details

MILWAUKEE (Feb. 1, 2012) – Pare down a Harley-Davidson Softail motorcycle to its essential elements and you have the Slim. From its trimmed front fender to its narrow rear end, Slim is a no-nonsense, back-to-basics motorcycle. Call it stripped. Call it old school. Call it lean and mean. What’s left is the elemental Softail profile and iconic Harley-Davidson style that recalls classic custom bobbers of the 1950s.

“It’s time to make the engine the focal point of the motorcycle,” says Harley-Davidson Senior Designer Casey Ketterhagen, “so we put a Softail on a diet to get the proportions back in check. Scale down the rear with a narrow tire and chopped fender and the heart of the bike, the motor, once again becomes the focus. We left a gap between the nose of the seat and tank so the rider can see the top of the motor. I like to be able to look down and see what’s moving me.”
To keep the rear of the motorcycle simple and clean, the Slim has combination stop/turn/tail lights and a side-mounted license plate. The rear fender struts are left uncovered, exposing the forged steel and fasteners. A thin formed-leather strap covers the fuel tank seam. The powertrain is finished with polished covers instead of chrome, and the black cylinders are left unhighlighted. The FL front fender is trimmed to expose more of the tire.

   “I’d personally like to strip the bike down even further,” says Ketterhagen, “but this is as far as we can go on a production model. The Slim is intended to be a direct interpretation of home-built customs of the 1940s and 50s, and we used a number of components that evoke that era, beginning with a Hollywood handlebar.”
   The Hollywood bar, identified by its wide bend and cross brace, was originally an accessory for Harley-Davidson models with a Springer fork. The name may have been coined because owners of that era who used the cross-brace to mount lights and bags had “gone Hollywood” with excessive accessorization. For the Slim, the cross-braced bar and louvered headlight nacelle are finished in gloss black. Other period styling cues include a gloss black “cat’s eye” tank console with a retro speedometer face, half-moon rider footboards, a round air cleaner cover, and gloss black wheel rims and hubs. The cover of the solo seat is stitched in a tuck-and-roll pattern.
   “The seat really gives you the feeling of sitting in the bike, rather than on it,” says Ketterhagen. “The bars are nice and low, too, so when you’re riding you have an unobstructed view forward, which reinforces the idea that this is a very elemental motorcycle, a real back-to-basics ride.”
   A counter-balanced Twin Cam 103B engine is rigid-mounted within the frame, creating a solid connection between rider and the machine. The Softail chassis mimics the clean lines of a vintage hardtail frame, but utilizes rear suspension control provided by coil-over shock absorbers mounted horizontally and out of sight within the frame rails. With the combination of a 23.8-inch seat height and rider footboards, the Slim comfortably fits a wide range of riders and offers light side-stand lift-off. A pull-back riser from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories can be installed to move the handlebar back two inches without changing control cables and lines.

Dark Custom Gets Some Color – A New Narrow Sportster in Sparkling Metal Flake Paint

MILWAUKEE (Feb. 1, 2012) – The Harley-Davidson Seventy-Two motorcycle is a metal flake dream machine, a Sportster on a trip back to the days when the cool kids rode a Sting-Ray and the big boys parked choppers in a row on the curb. Those motorcycles were long and lean; candy-apple color and gleaming chrome shimmering in hazy summer sunlight. From its Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint and ape bars to its narrow whitewall tires, the Seventy-Two is a respectful nod to that era, and to the influence of the custom culture that still percolates today along Whittier Boulevard, the legendary cruising street in East Los Angeles also known as Route 72. A new generation of custom builder is tapping into that era and making a fresh statement, not just in California but in garages across the country, even around the world.

   “In creating the Seventy-Two, we were also inspired by the vibe of the early chopper era,” says Frank Savage, Harley-Davidson Manager of Industrial Design. “Those bikes were colorful and chromed, but also narrow and stripped down to the essentials. You look at period examples and they are almost as simple as a bicycle. It’s a custom style that’s very particular to America and that California scene.”
   Metal flake, an iconic design element of the ‘70s, appeared in everything from dune buggy gel coat to vinyl diner upholstery, and on custom motorcycles. Harley-Davidson brings the sparkle back on the Seventy-Two with Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint. This new finish is created by applying a black base coat, followed by a polyurethane system that carries hexagon-shaped flakes that are more than seven times the diameter of metal flake used in typical production paint. Each flake is coated with a thin aluminum film and then tinted red. Four applications of clear coat, combined with hand sanding, create a smooth finish over the flakes.
   “The final touch to the Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint is a logo on the tank top and pinstripe scallop details on both fenders,” says Savage. “Each was originally created by hand, and we recreated that art in a decal for production, so they still have the appearance of hand-applied graphics in that they are not exactly perfect. The graphics are then covered with a final clear coat application.”
   A solo seat and side-mounted license plate bracket leave much of the chopped rear fender – and more of that paint – exposed on the Seventy-Two. The powertrain is finished in Gray powdercoat with chrome covers and a new round air cleaner with a dished cover. A classic Sportster 2.1-gallon “peanut” fuel tank adds a final period touch to the motorcycle.

S&P Boosts Ratings For Harley-Davidson

(AP) NEW YORK — Standard & Poor's Ratings Services on Wednesday raised its investment grade long-term corporate credit and senior unsecured ratings for Harley-Davidson Inc. to "BBB+" from "BBB," citing the company's 11 percent jump in motorcycle shipments.
The ratings service also affirmed the Milwaukee-based company's "A-2" short-term rating. Harley's ratings are no longer under review for possible upgrade and the outlook is stable.
On Tuesday, Harley said its worldwide shipments rose 11 percent in 2011, marking its first year-over-year increase after four years of declines.

Fourth quarter 2011 earnings per diluted share increased 15% to a record $0.90 with sales increasing 26% from the year earlier period to a record $782.0 million.
All product lines experienced increased sales and market share for the full year 2011.
International sales increased 43% in the fourth quarter 2011 and 39% for full year 2011 despite a volatile European economic environment.
Full year 2011 earnings per diluted share increased 50% to a record $3.20 with record sales of $2,656.9 million, an increase of 33% from the 2010 full year.
Full year 2011 gross profit margins improved 130 basis points over 2010.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 2012-- Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE:PII) today reported record net income of $0.90 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of 2011, up 15 percent over the 2010 fourth quarter. Net income for the fourth quarter 2011 was a record $63.9 million, an increase of 17 percent over the same period in 2010. Record sales of $782.0 million for the fourth quarter 2011 increased 26 percent over 2010 fourth quarter sales of $618.4 million.

Full Year Results
For the full year ended December 31, 2011, Polaris reported record net income of $227.6 million, or a record $3.20 per diluted share, compared to $147.1 million, or $2.14 per diluted share for the year ended December 31, 2010. This represents a 50 percent increase on a diluted share basis and a 55 percent increase in net income. Sales for the full year 2011 totaled a record $2,656.9 million, an increase of 33 percent compared to sales of $1,991.1 million for the full year 2010.
“Our record fourth quarter results were a fitting ending to a year in which we generated record annual sales and earnings and significantly exceeded our initial expectations. 2012 Business Outlook

Full year 2012 earnings are expected to be in the range of $3.65 to $3.80 per diluted share, which represents an increase of 14 to 19 percent when compared to full year 2011 earnings. Sales for full year 2012 are expected to increase five to eight percent over full year 2011 sales, with sales increases projected in each product line and geographic region with the exception of snowmobiles.

Summary of Operations
Off-road Vehicles (“ORV’) sales increased 18 percent during the fourth quarter 2011 from the fourth quarter 2010. This increase reflects continued market share gains for both ATVs and side-by-side vehicles driven by industry leading product offerings and the continued success of the MVP retail go-to-market process. Polaris’ North American ORV unit retail sales to consumers increased mid-teens percent for the 2011 fourth quarter compared to the 2010 fourth quarter, with ATV unit retail sales growing upper single digits percent and side-by-side vehicle unit retail sales increasing about 20 percent over the prior year. North American dealer inventories of ATVs continued to decline, decreasing eight percent from the 2010 fourth quarter and sequentially decreasing six percent from the third quarter of 2011. Side-by-side North American dealer inventories for both the 2011 fourth quarter and sequentially from the 2011 third quarter were up to accommodate the continued strong retail demand. ORV sales outside of North America increased 42 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to a year ago. The Company continued to be an innovation leader in 2011 with several new ATV and side-by-side vehicles introduced during the year, including the most recent introduction in January 2012 of the high performance RANGER RZR XP4 900 to Polaris’ family of recreational vehicles. The RANGER RZR XP4 900 has all the features of the two seated version of the RZR XP 900 including an 88 horsepower electronic fuel injected twin cylinder engine and 3-link trailing arm independent rear suspension with 12.5 inches of travel, but with the ability to deliver razor-sharp performance and agility for 4 passengers. For the full year 2011, Polaris ORV sales increased 32 percent compared to the prior year.
Snowmobile sales increased 63 percent during the 2011 fourth quarter compared to the prior year’s fourth quarter. The fourth quarter 2011 increase in sales reflects significantly reduced snowmobile dealer inventory levels entering the 2011 - 2012 selling season compared to the prior year resulting in increased orders from dealers, as well as the impact of a shift in shipments of snowmobiles later in the year as the Company chose to ship its snowmobiles closer to expected consumer demand compared to last year. Polaris’ North American snowmobile retail sales to consumers in the 2011 season-to-date period were up high single digits percent over the 2010 season-to-date period despite the lack of snowfall in many parts of the snowbelt regions of the United States. North American dealer inventories of snowmobiles at December 2011 were seven percent higher than the very low levels a year ago. Sales of snowmobiles outside of North America, principally the Scandinavian region, increased 52 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to a year ago. For the full year 2011, sales of Polaris snowmobiles increased 48 percent compared to the prior year.
Sales of On-Road Vehicles increased 69 percent during the fourth quarter of 2011 when compared to the same period in 2010. On-Road Vehicle sales are comprised of Victory and Indian brand motorcycles, as well as the Company’s small electric vehicles sales of GEM and Goupil. Victory motorcycle North American unit retail sales to consumers increased about 20 percent during the 2011 fourth quarter when compared to a strong 2010 fourth quarter, resulting in continued market share gains. North American dealer inventory of Victory motorcycles increased five percent at December 2011 compared to last year levels as the Company added Victory dealers in 2011. Sales of On-Road Vehicles to customers outside of North America increased 111 percent compared to the prior year’s fourth quarter. The increase in On-Road Vehicle sales outside North America is primarily due to increased sales from Victory motorcycles and the addition of sales from the acquisition of Goupil in the 2011 fourth quarter. For the full year 2011, Polaris On-Road Vehicle sales increased 79 percent compared to the prior year.
Parts, Garments, and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales increased 13 percent during the fourth quarter 2011 compared to the same period last year primarily due to increased ORV, Victory motorcycle and international related PG&A sales. For the full year 2011, Polaris PG&A sales increased 19 percent compared to the prior year.
Gross profit dollars increased 19 percent to $204.3 million for the fourth quarter 2011 compared to $171.5 million for the fourth quarter of 2010 primarily due to higher volume. Gross profit as a percentage of sales was 26.1 percent for the fourth quarter of 2011, a decrease of 160 basis points from 27.7 percent for the fourth quarter of 2010. The decrease in gross profit margin percentage for the 2011 fourth quarter was primarily due to higher commodity prices, as anticipated, unfavorable product mix and negative currency impacts, partially offset by manufacturing realignment savings and continued product cost reduction efforts during the quarter. For the 2011 full year, gross profit as a percentage of sales increased 130 basis points to 27.9 percent.
Operating expenses for the fourth quarter 2011 increased 21 percent to $118.1 million compared to $97.6 million for the fourth quarter of 2010. As a percent of sales, operating expenses decreased 70 basis points to 15.1 percent compared to 15.8 percent for the same period last year. Operating expenses in absolute dollars for the fourth quarter 2011 increased primarily due to incremental investments made in global market expansion and new product development initiatives along with the added operating expenses of the acquisitions made in 2011. Operating expenses, as a percent of sales, decreased due to leverage achieved from the increased sales volume during the quarter. For the 2011 full year, operating expenses, as a percent of sales, decreased 80 basis points to 15.6 percent.
Income from financial services increased 65 percent to $7.0 million during fourth quarter 2011 from $4.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 primarily due to increased profitability generated from the retail credit portfolios with Sheffield, GE and HSBC. For the 2011 full year, income from financial services was $24.1 million, a 43 percent increase compared to $16.9 million for the full year 2010.
Interest expense increased to $1.2 million for the fourth quarter 2011 from $0.5 million for the fourth quarter 2010 due to higher interest rates on the long-term senior notes issued in May 2011. For the 2011 full year, interest expense was $4.0 million compared to $2.7 million for the full year 2010.
Non-operating other income was $4.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2011 as compared to $0.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. The increase in other income is the result of foreign currency exchange rate movements and the resulting effects on foreign currency transactions and balance sheet positions related to the Company’s foreign subsidiaries. For the 2011 full year, non-operating other income (expense) was $0.7 million income compared to $0.3 million expense for the full year 2010.
The Income tax provision for the fourth quarter 2011 was recorded at a rate of 33.8 percent of pretax income compared to 30.4 percent of pretax income for the fourth quarter 2010. The higher income tax provision rate in the 2011 fourth quarter is primarily due to last year’s fourth quarter rate reflecting the cumulative benefit to adjust for the extension of the research and development credit by the U.S. Congress late in the fourth quarter of 2010. For the 2011 full year, the income tax provision was recorded at a rate of 34.3 percent of pretax income compared to 32.7 percent for the full year 2010.

Financial Position and Cash Flow
Net cash provided by operating activities was $302.5 million for the year ended December 31, 2011 compared to $297.6 million for the full year 2010. The increase in net income was mostly offset by an increased investment in working capital, particularly increased accounts receivables related to the Company’s continued international expansion, a short-term income tax receivable and higher factory inventory levels supporting business growth. Total long-term debt at December 31, 2011 was unchanged from a year ago at $100.0 million. The Company’s debt-to-total capital ratio was 17 percent at December 31, 2011, compared to 35 percent for the same period in 2010. Cash and cash equivalents were $325.3 million at December 31, 2011 compared to $393.9 million for the same period in 2010. During 2011 Polaris used cash for investment activities totaling $141.1 million primarily for capital investments to remain competitive and to acquire several businesses. The Company used $227.5 million of cash for financing activities including debt reduction, the repurchase of Polaris stock and the payment of dividends to shareholders.

Polaris’ Board of Directors moves dividend pay date
Due to the scheduling timetable of the Company’s 2012 Board of Directors’ meetings, each of the quarterly dividend declarations by the Board of Directors in 2012 are anticipated to be approximately two weeks later than historically declared. As a result, the anticipated quarterly dividend pay dates will be approximately one month later in 2012 than in prior years. Polaris has increased dividends for 16 consecutive years through 2011 and management will recommend to the Board of Directors to once again increase the dividend for 2012. The Board of Directors expects to declare the first quarter 2012 dividend amount sometime in the first week of February 2012.

Harley-Davidson Earnings, Retail Sales Motorcycle Sales Show Continued Strength

MILWAUKEE, January 24, 2012 -- Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) reported a strong finish to 2011, with improved fourth-quarter performance capping a year of earnings and dealer retail sales growth.
Income from continuing operations was $54.6 million, or $0.24 per share, in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to a loss of $42.1 million, or $0.18 per share from continuing operations in the year-ago quarter. For the full year 2011, income from continuing operations more than doubled to $548.1 million, or $2.33 per share, compared to income of $259.7 million, or $1.11 per share, from continuing operations in 2010.
Retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 10.9 percent worldwide in the fourth quarter compared to the prior-year period, including an 11.8 percent increase in the U.S. For the full year 2011, new Harley-Davidson motorcycle retail sales rose 5.9 percent worldwide and 5.8 percent in the U.S.

On a segment basis, full-year operating income from Motorcycles and Related Products grew 48.2 percent on higher shipment volume and operating margin improvement, while operating income from Financial Services grew 47.8 percent on continued improvement in credit performance, compared to 2010.

Retail Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sales 
On a worldwide basis, dealers sold 40,359 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the fourth quarter of 2011, a 10.9 percent increase compared to 36,390 motorcycles sold in the year-ago period. Dealers sold 23,753 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the U.S., an 11.8 percent increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2010. In international markets, dealers sold 16,606 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the fourth quarter, an increase of 9.7 percent compared to the year-ago period.
For the full year, worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 5.9 percent to 235,188 units, compared to sales of 222,110 units in 2010. U.S. retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 5.8 percent to 151,683 units, and in international markets sales increased 6.1 percent to 83,505 units, for the full year compared to 2010. Industry-wide U.S. heavyweight new motorcycle (651cc-plus) retail unit sales increased 4.3 percent for the full year, compared to 2010.

Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and Related Products Segment Financial Results Fourth-Quarter Segment Results: Revenue from Motorcycles during the fourth quarter of 2011 of $791.9 million was up 13.5 percent compared to the year-ago period. The Company shipped 50,730 motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide during the quarter, compared to shipments of 44,481 motorcycles in the fourth quarter of 2010.
Revenue from Motorcycle Parts and Accessories (P&A) totaled $161.2 million during the quarter, up 7.9 percent, and revenue from General Merchandise, which includes MotorClothes® Apparel and Accessories, was $69.3 million, up 12.8 percent compared to the year-ago period. Gross margin was 31.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to 29.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010. Fourth-quarter operating margin from motorcycles and related products was 3.5 percent on operating income of $35.6 million. In 2010, the Company had an operating loss in the fourth quarter from motorcycles and related products of $6.8 million.
Twelve-Month Segment Results: For the full year of 2011, the Company shipped 233,117 motorcycles to dealers and distributors, a 10.7 percent increase compared to 210,494 units shipped in 2010.
Revenue from Motorcycles for the full year was $3.55 billion, a 13.3 percent increase compared to the year-ago period. Full-year P&A revenue was $816.6 million, a 9.0 percent increase compared to 2010. General Merchandise revenue was $274.1 million, a 5.8 percent increase compared to 2010.
Gross margin for the full year was 33.4 percent and operating margin was 12.0 percent, compared to 34.2 percent and 9.1 percent respectively in 2010.
Financial Services Segment The Financial Services segment recorded operating income of $56.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to operating income of $43.5 million in the year-ago quarter. The increase in fourth-quarter operating income was largely the result of continued improvement in credit performance at Harley-Davidson Financial Services. For the full year, operating income from financial services was $268.8 million, compared to operating income of $181.9 million in 2010.
Guidance Harley-Davidson expects to ship 240,000 to 245,000 motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide in 2012, a three-to five-percent increase compared to 2011. In the first quarter of 2012, the Company expects to ship 58,000 to 63,000 motorcycles.
For the full year, Harley-Davidson expects gross margin to be between 34.75 percent and 35.75 percent. The Company expects capital expenditures of between $190 million and $210 million in 2012, which includes approximately $25 million to support restructuring activities.
Restructuring Update In 2011, Harley-Davidson realized cumulative savings from restructuring activities initiated since early 2009 of $217 million, in line with company estimates of $210 million to $230 million. Upon completion, Harley-Davidson continues to expect restructuring activities to generate annual ongoing savings of $315 million to $335 million, beginning in 2014. For the full year 2011, Harley-Davidson incurred one-time restructuring costs of $68.0 million. The Company now expects all restructuring activities initiated since 2009 to result in one-time overall costs of $500 million to $520 million through 2013, including $50 million to $60 million in 2012, a $5 million reduction to the range previously provided.

Income Tax Rate 
For the full year 2011, the Company’s effective income tax rate from continuing operations was 30.9 percent, compared to 33.5 percent in 2010. The lower 2011 effective tax rate was mainly driven by a 2011 change in the Wisconsin income tax law associated with certain net operating losses, and a one-time tax charge in 2010 associated with the federal healthcare legislation. In 2012, the Company expects its full-year effective tax rate from continuing operations to be approximately 35.5 percent.
Cash Flow Cash and marketable securities totaled $1.68 billion at year-end 2011, compared to $1.16 billion at year-end 2010. For full-year 2011, Harley-Davidson generated $885.3 million of cash provided by operating activities from continuing operations, compared to $1.16 billion in 2010. Capital expenditures for full-year 2011 were $189.0 million.

Share Repurchase 
The Company repurchased 3.5 million shares of Harley-Davidson, Inc. common stock at a cost of $127.0 million during the fourth quarter of 2011. At year-end 2011, there were approximately 230.5 million shares of Harley-Davidson common stock outstanding and 18.6 million shares remaining on board-approved share repurchase authorizations.

Discontinued Operations 
In the fourth quarter of 2011, Harley-Davidson recognized a $51.0 million benefit on income from discontinued operations, driven by the reversal of tax amounts reserved in prior years related to the divestiture of the Company’s MV Agusta subsidiaries. The amounts had been reserved pending an agreement with the IRS on the tax treatment of the transaction. With the agreement, the Company anticipates no further financial adjustments related to MV Agusta.

It is our sad task to inform you that this year´s 14th edition of the Custom Chrome Europe Dealer Show with the 2012 Custom Chrome International Bike Show Series European Championship had to be cancelled.

The surprise news comes from CCE Headquarter Bad Kreuznach and was made to support CCI in California where re-structuring is taking place with the task of adapting CCI’s US operations to the necessities of the current American market situation.
In 2011, Custom Chrome Europe has enjoyed another record sales year and great success in both the European Custom bike market as well as the great support for the Dealer Show at Mainz, which in the last decade has become one of the most important Custombike events in the European Bike Show calendar, thanks to the attending builders, CCE suppliers, CCE customers and Custombike press. The glamourous event has given the European Custombike scene a high class showcase for their ingenuity and creativity and has been published worldwide. Preparations for the 2012 event were well underway and in the final stages, when announcements from CCI Headquarters forced a sudden
change of plans.

Thermal Arc, a Thermadyne brand leader in arc welding technology, has launched the Fabricator 252i “3-in-1” MIG-Stick-TIG welding system. Weighing 66 lbs. and with an output range of 5- to 300-amps (250 amps at 40% duty cycle), the Fabricator 252i is the second in a new category of welding products: multi-process, fully integrated, portable welders. With an MSRP of $2,509 for the base package, the Fabricator 252i provides three welding processes for the price of competitive MIG-only units.
Unlike other welders, the Fabricator 252i enables users to choose the best process for the application at hand. For example, its MIG and gas-shielded flux cored outputs provide maximum productivity in the shop. The Stick and self-shielded flux cored processes work better in windy and outdoor conditions, as well as on rusty or dirty metal, while the DC TIG process enables users to weld stainless, copper, nickel, bronze or brass alloys or on applications requiring precise control over heat input and weld bead placement.
Thermal Arc designed the Fabricator 252i for light industrial fabrication, mechanical contractors, farm/ranch, motorsports, maintenance/repair, light construction and continuing technical educational and training facilities.
The Fabricator 252i incorporates advanced inverter technology to optimize arc performance for all three welding processes and provide such features such as:

MIG inductance control to improve arc stability and reduce spatter.

Stick Hot Start to prevent the electrode from sticking.

Digital meters, a comprehensive set-up chart and quick-change (no tools) polarity connections make the unit extremely user friendly. Other performance enhancing features include a 10-pin receptacle for MIG welding aluminum with a spool gun, burn back control, run-in speed control and wire sharp to improve MIG arc starts, downslope control to reduce crater cracking when TIG welding, adjustable pre- and post-flow and 4T trigger hold control to reduce hand fatigue on long TIG or MIG welds.

MIG/Flux Cored: 5 to 300 amps/14 to 30 volts (250A/26.5V @ 40% duty cycle). It can run solid wires from .023- to .045” diameter, flux cored wires from .030- to .045" and aluminum wires from .030- to 3/64”. The unit accepts 4-, 8- and 12”-diameter wire spools.
Stick (DC only): Up to 300 amps (230A/29.2V @ 40% duty cycle), suitable for running Stick electrodes up to 1/4” diameter.
TIG (DC only): 5 to 300 amps (250A/20V @ 40% duty cycle), suitable for running all common diameter tungsten electrodes.

By far the best value of any product in the market in this category today, the Fabricator 252i is essentially a free Stick/TIG welder for the price of a MIG unit. Thermal Arc tests the output of its units at 104o F, so users can be assured of getting full output even in hot conditions. With an IP23S NEMA rating, the unit is suitable for outdoor use.
The Fabricator 252i features power factor correction (PFC), which lowers the unit’s primary current draw and enables it to provide full output on a 50-amp circuit. The Fabricator 252i tolerates voltage fluctuations from 187 to 276 VAC, which makes it especially suited for running off any generator (including PTO-driven units) that supplies at least 8.2 kVA (6.6 kW) of power.

John Lehman, Founder Lehman Trikes, Passes Away

It is with great sadness that Lehman Trikes announces the untimely loss of John K. Lehman, Founder and Director. John passed away on Thursday, January 5, in Arizona. The suspected cause of death was a heart failure brought on by an embolism. John was 60 years old. He is survived by his wife Linda, one son - Quinten, one daughter - Leann, three surviving sisters – Gladys, Linda, Carol, and three grandchildren.

John was one of the most recognized, admired and respected individuals in the motorcycling industry, and is generally considered the Father of the Modern Trike. In 2009 John was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame.
In 1984, John’s passion for motorcycling and his love of family led him to create the first modern trike so his wife, Linda, could carry one of their children. John’s creation had more to do with family togetherness than a business venture. The vehicle garnered so much interest everywhere they traveled that Lehman Industries was born, and John Lehman would go on to become one of the most recognized names in motorcycling.
In 1993, Larry Strilchuk, a long time friend, joined John and Lehman Trikes, Inc. was formed. “Today is crushingly sad,” stated Larry, “John Lehman was my lifelong friend and amazing partner. Through good and bad times, John’s gracious nature, love of family and friends, and positive outlook always touched everyone who came in contact with him. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.”
Known for his caring and charitable nature, John along with Larry started a program called the “Good Turn Trike” which eventually became an annual event providing people with a passion for motorcycling, who face some of life’s greatest challenges, a trike – for free. John’s big heart helped raise money for terminally ill children, “Make A Wish Foundation”, “Kids n’ Chrome”, and many other worthwhile charities. He remained active in the company until his passing.
Lehman Trikes, Inc. had recently announced a Letter of Intent from an investment group relating to the sale of Lehman Trikes USA, Inc. The passing of Mr. Lehman will not materially affect that endeavor.

Harley-Davidson (HOG) is up 10% in the past year, vs. a basically flat S&P 500, bike volumes have started to show meaningful growth and the restructuring plan is in full swing. So is there more upside in the stock? The answer appears to be yes, bike volumes are still relatively depressed relative to historical standards, Harley's restructuring plan still has scope to deliver EPS growth in 2012 and 2013. As a result, Harley-Davidson could rise 25% this year, with the results and guidance coming later this month being a potential catalyst for the stock. S&S Cycle and Crane Motorcycle New M.A.P. Policy Discontinuation of Internet Reseller Policy

Five years ago, S&S Cycle instituted an Internet Reseller Policy (IRP) that restricted online sales of S&S product. Much has changed since that policy was developed with e-commerce becoming the most rapidly growing of retail channels and many of our resellers investing in online solutions. S&S Cycle’s IRP limited the ability for our resellers to effectively market and sell S&S and Crane products against competitors supporting online sales.

Effective January 2, 2012, S&S Cycle replaced the IRP with a new Minimum Advertised Price policy (MAP) that will require retailers to be in compliance by March 31st, 2012. The MAP policy applies to all advertised pricing including print, radio, television, internet media and new product sold on auction websites. Unlike the IRP, the MAP policy will allow retailers to actively promote and sell S&S parts on e-commerce sites provided prices shown are not less than S&S’ Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price.
Unlike the IRP, the MAP policy will maintain the price integrity expected for premium brands like S&S and Crane, not only in online advertising but in all forms of communication including radio, television, flyers, posters, newspapers, catalogs, coupons, mailers, and email.
The Dealer Center section of the S&S Cycle website has been modified to communicate important information about the new MAP policy. In addition to the policy itself, the section includes a form which resellers can use to report advertising that does not conform to the policy, and a current S&S Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price list. South Carolina Mulling Helmet Law

State Senator Ralph Anderson has prefiled S1046, a bill to require riders of all ages to wear helmets while in South Carolina and the bill was referred to the Senate’s Transportation Committee the same day. The measure requires the Department of Transportation to “adopt and amend regulations covering the types of helmets and the specifications therefore and to establish and maintain a list of approved helmets which meet the specifications as established hereunder.” While this language is boilerplate on many helmet laws, the fact is no state to my knowledge actually maintains such a list, so it kinda moot.
Should the bill pass the hurdles of the legislature, it will still have to pass the desk of Governor Nikki Haley, who enjoys the support of ABATE of South Carolina, an ABATE of Lexington member, who spoke passionately in favor of motorcyclist’s right to choose whether or not to wear a helmet at the 2008 Helmet Law rally (video). Maggie Valley (NC) parleys with Rally in the Valley, Thunder in the Smokies to negotiate truce
The coordinators of the annual Rally in the Valley motorcycle event have strapped Maggie Valley leaders a seemingly impossible ultimatum that could leave the town in straits no matter what they decide.
Rally in the Valley coordinators asked the town to bar any other motorcycle festivals from coming to town the week before or after its September rally in hopes of ensuring a bigger draw for its own event. If the town didn’t comply, Rally in the Valley would be no more.
The town dutifully responded by asking Maggie’s other big motorcycle event of the fall, Thunder in the Smokies, traditionally held the weekend before Rally in the Valley, to move dates.

'Bike Week' Legal Battle Ends

DAYTONA BEACH -- The Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce has won its nearly yearlong legal battle to protect its right and that of local businesses to freely use the phrase "Daytona Beach Bike Week" on T-shirts and other goods.
U.S. District Court Judge Mary Scriven on Tuesday ruled invalid a claim by Holly Hill-based Joe Cool Inc. and its two New York affiliates to have exclusive ownership rights to the name of Daytona Beach's annual spring motorcycle rally, which began in 1939.
That claim was based on Joe Cool owner Yosef Amar's purchase in 2009 for $87.50 of a state trademark to the phrase Daytona Beach Bike Week.

New Hampshire—Judge Rules Towns Can't Make Own Motorcycle Noise Rules

BRENTWOOD — New Hampshire cities and towns cannot impose limits on motorcycle noise that are stricter than what state law allows, a Rockingham County judge has ruled.
“If each town in New Hampshire had the authority to enact different noise emission ordinances, the state would be subject to a checkerboard pattern of laws,” ruled Superior Court Judge Kenneth McHugh. “For example, a motorcyclist who complies with the state noise emission limit could be precluded from driving through a town because that town enacted a lower noise emission limit than the state.”
The judge's decision comes in response to a lawsuit filed by Seacoast Motorcycles Inc., owner of the Seacoast Harley Davidson dealership at 17 Lafayette Road in North Hampton. Seacoast filed suit against the Town of North Hampton, successfully arguing that the town did not have legal authority to adopt its own motorcycle noise ordinance.

Layoff Notices Go Out At Harley-Davidson

Harley-Davidson Inc. has begun sending layoff notices to hourly workers in Wisconsin as part of its plan to reduce headcount at Milwaukee-area manufacturing facilities by about 26 percent to make room for seasonal workers.
The layoffs were first announced in September 2010 as part of a new seven-year contract with about 950 union workers. Harley-Davidson plans to lay off about 250 workers and hire 150 to 250 temporary employees for seasonal production spikes.

Helmet Law Modification Sought In Massachusetts

If State Senator Steven Brewer, Representative Anne Gobi and the Modified Motorcycle Association have their way, motorcyclists 21 and over will be free to choose whether or not to wear a motorcycle helmet.
Another proposed bill by Senator Robert Hedlund would allow motorcyclists from other states without helmet laws to choose their headgear.
Paul Cote, Justice Rider and BOLT of Massachusetts, said there is an economic incentive to pass the legislation because motorcyclists travel to nearby states that do not require helmets and spend money while there. New Hampshire has no motorcycle-helmet law, while Maine and Connecticut require protective headgear for all riders under age 18. St. Paul Harley Dealer Wins Ruling On New Sales Rules

A federal judge has put the brakes on new Harley-Davidson sales restrictions that a St. Paul dealership said would put it out of business.
U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz on Monday ordered Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Motor Co. not to enforce its ban on sales of parts, accessories and apparel through third-party websites or to international customers. The judge's order is effective through Feb. 29.
St. Paul Harley-Davidson (incorporated as St. Paul Motorsports Inc.) sued the motorcycle manufacturer in October to fight the policies, which would eliminate about a quarter of the 72-year-old dealership's revenue.

After 27 consecutive years without a hitch, somebody threw a monkey wrench into an annual event that provides thousands of toys to disadvantaged children each holiday season — just six days after the event's organizer won the latest court victory in a long and bitter dispute with the local police establishment.

On Nov. 14, a ruling by Lehigh County Judge Michele Varricchio reaffirmed previous rulings that Macungie Mayor Rick Hoffman is in charge of the borough police department, as the law clearly provides, and Police Chief Edward Harry Jr. cannot deny Hoffman access to the department.
Last Sunday, the motorcycle organization ABATE held its 28th annual Lehigh Valley Toy Run, with a procession of 1,500 motorcycles and other vehicles carrying toys from the Walmart store in Lower Macungie Township to the Volunteers of America Children's Center in Allentown.
On all 27 previous toy runs, police and other authorities provided escorts and helped the long processions stay together by moving through intersections without interference from traffic lights or other obstructions.

City of Sturgis Reduces Vendor List Fee From $600 to $20

Sturgis has dropped its asking price for a copy of the list of vendors at the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally to $20. The city had originally been asking $600 for a copy of the list.
Previous city manager, David Boone, raised the asking price from $50 to $600 when he began the job. City finance officer Fay Bueno said the amount of labor that is put into compiling the list of more than 700 vendors is what drove the cost up.
The price of the document has remained a hot topic for those requesting the list, including Sturgis resident Jack Hoel, who sent a letter to Attorney General Marty Jackley concerning the subject.

"This is obviously a public record," Hoel said.
The letter sent back to Hoel states that "public documents must be provided upon ‘payment of the actual cost of mailing or transmittal, the cost of reproduction, or other fee established by statute or administrative rule.'" The letter goes on to say that under state statute, requests for public records that involve more than an hour of staff time to locate, assemble or reproduce may be billed extra.

Michigan House OKs Partial Motorcycle Helmet Repeal

House bill allows riders 21 and older, who have a motorcycle endorsement for two years, and whom also carry $20,000 in insurance, to ride sans helmet. The Senate bill which passed previously requires $100,000 in insurance. The bill now goes back to Senate to hash out the differences, then on to Governor Snyder for his signature. Two previous repeal bills have been shot down by the former governor Jennifer Granholm. Governor Snyder as been silent about whether he will sign the bill when it reaches his desk. It has been suggested that he would like the bill to be combined with a bill reforming the state's no-fault insurance law.

At a time when every motorcyclist was stereotyped as a “Hell’s Angel,” The Brothers of the Wheel club members received a brutal beating by the West Virginia State Police in Lincoln County, West Virginia. The night resulted in the arrest of 15, the hospitalization of four and a federal lawsuit where a jury ruled on behalf of the bikers. Through interviews with club members, eyewitnesses and attorneys, Lincoln County Massacre tells the story of the events leading up to April 20, 1980 and the three years that followed.

The Massacre

On April 19, 1980, the Brothers of the Wheel and The Bootleggers motorcycle clubs met at the White House Tavern, in Lincoln County, W.Va. They traveled from all over West Virginia, bringing their wives and children, and planned to camp inside the bar that night. But after a larger-than-expected crowd rolled in the town of West Hamlin, the bikers made the decision to camp outside.
To keep warm during the cold April night, men cut down trees for firewood in the woods behind the bar. But the immense darkness blinded their vision causing them to chop down a sapling which fell on a power line. The valley became dark. The loss of power, in addition to the overwhelming amount of “strangers” in the area, caused the neighbors to panic.
Two officers from the Lincoln County detachment of the West Virginia State Police, drove by the bar and noticed an absence of light from within. Troopers B.R. Lester and R.W. Coon pulled over and advised patrons to move to the parking lot and out of the bar, until the power was restored. Both police and bikers say the exchange was civil.
Soon after a local biker wrecked his motorcycle in a neighbor’s freshly seeded yard. A second biker came upon the accident and began to threaten the neighbor, causing locals to panic and call the police. Neither bikers were affiliated with The Brothers of the Wheel or The Bootleggers.
After midnight on April 20, most of the bikers had cleared the area. The remaining 10 bikes sat outside of the tavern. Some time between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. state police officers, county sheriffs and officers arrived at the White House Tavern.
What happened from the time the officers arrived and the bikers were taken to jail seems to be a whirl of confusion.
According to the bikers, police arrived on the scene with their headlights off and "snuck" up on them in their sleeping bags and tents. More than 25 police officers jumped out of their cars immediately started beating them with riot clubs, bikers say.
Eyewitnesses and bikers claim that police forced male bikers to lie face-down in broken glass, as they beat them with their “billy sticks.” Women and children were advised to stand against the front of the tavern and watch. The beating continued until there was a pool of blood in the sinkholes of the ground, according to eyewitness Naomi Smith.
Newspaper reports state that officers destroyed the motorcycles, bashing headlights, slashing tires and breaking windows out of cars. Police stated they did not intentionally damage the motorcycles.
15 bikers, including one woman, were taken to Cabell County’s jail. After being booked, three people were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington.
Following the night, bikers filed a federal lawsuit against the state of West Virginia. In 1983, they were awarded a total of $24,000 for damages and hospital bills but were awarded no punitive damages.

Harley-Davidson Motor Company will celebrate Military Appreciation Month once again this November with a number of efforts to show its support and gratitude for the men and women in the military. One way the company will do that is by teaming up with the United Service Organizations (USO).

Harley-Davidson will welcome donations at its nearly 650 dealerships throughout the country on behalf of the USO Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. The donations will be used to assemble care packages for troops overseas. The company is also challenging its U.S. Harley Owners Group chapters to raise $500 each for the Operation USO Care Package program.
"We're honored to support such a well-respected organization as part of our military appreciation efforts this year," said Mike McCann, Director of Core Customer and Military Marketing for Harley-Davidson. "We want to show our support for those living away from home and protecting our country."
In addition to supporting the USO through care package donations, Harley-Davidson is celebrating Military Appreciation Month by hosting a military-only concert by the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in San Diego on Thursday, Dec. 1, where nearly all of the tickets will be given to select soldiers at nearby bases. For one lucky military winner and a guest, Harley-Davidson will provide a full VIP experience for the concert, including travel to San Diego, dinner and a motorcycle ride from Los Angeles to San Diego with the band. Entries for the contest will be accepted online through Nov. 15.
At the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, all current and previous military members and their immediate families (one additional adult and up to four children under age 18) will receive free admission on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5-6.
Finally, Harley-Davidson's support of the USO will extend through the end of next year. Every care package distributed by the USO in 2012 will include a pair of tickets to the Harley-Davidson Museum – approximately 250,000 tickets in total.

Repeal Of Motorcycle Helmet Law In Michigan Close To Passing State House

Legislation lifting the mandatory helmet rule for Michigan motorcyclists is on the verge of passage in the state House after a preliminary vote this afternoon.
The House legislation would allow a motorcycle rider 21 years of age or older to get rid of the helmet after purchasing a minimum of $20,000 in medical insurance. The rider would also have to have at least two years of experience or pass a motorcycle safety course.
A final House vote is expected Wednesday.

Peterson is an avid v‐twin enthusiast and has designed and built several "one off" custom motorcycles throughout his career. In 2008, Peterson, the Customer Support Manager at S&S Cycle, Inc. was asked to complete and display his latest one off motorcycle design “Lil’ Evil” as one of the builders participating in the S&S Cycle, Inc. 50th Anniversary Celebration. That same year he was invited to compete as a competitor in the AMD Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Sturgis with that same bike. Peterson is also an avid AHDRA member and Drag Racer who still competes in the Street Pro Class on a limited basis.

MILWAUKEE, July 19, 2011 -- Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) reported continued strong improvement in earnings and dealer retail sales in the third quarter of 2011 and through nine months, compared to 2010.

Income from continuing operations in the third-quarter 2011 rose 95.9 percent to $183.6 million, or $0.78 per share, compared to income of $93.7 million, or $0.40 per share from continuing operations in the year-ago quarter. Third-quarter operating income from Motorcycles and Related Products grew 78.0 percent on higher shipment volume and operating margin improvement, while operating income from Financial Services grew 21.9 percent on continued improvement in credit performance, compared to the third quarter of 2010.
Retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles grew 5.1 percent worldwide in the third quarter compared to the prior-year period, led by a 5.4 percent rise in the U.S.
For the first nine months of 2011, Harley-Davidson income from continuing operations was up 63.5 percent compared to the year-ago period to $493.4 million, or $2.09 per share. Retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles through nine months grew 4.9 percent worldwide compared to the year-ago period.
“We are pleased with our sustained progress and we continue to realize strong momentum in the transformation our business,” said Keith Wandell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc.
“Two years ago we embarked on our strategy to focus solely on the Harley-Davidson brand, provide the flexibility required in today’s market and make Harley-Davidson lean, agile and more effective than ever at delivering remarkable products and extraordinary customer experiences. Today, we continue to see the positive results of the course we have charted,” Wandell said. “The changes underway in manufacturing, product development and retail capability will increasingly enable Harley-Davidson to be customer-led like never before.
“Harley-Davidson’s transformation involves a tremendous amount of highly complex, challenging work across every part of the organization. While much remains to be done, we are well down the road and everyone involved deserves much credit for bringing these changes to life,” Wandell said. “I continue to be impressed by the willingness of all employees, including the union leadership, to do the necessary things to transform our business to be a world class, sustainable operation."

Retail Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Sales
On a worldwide basis, third-quarter retail Harley-Davidson new motorcycle sales grew 5.1 percent compared to last year’s third quarter to 61,838 units. Dealers sold 42,640 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the U.S., a 5.4 percent increase compared to last year’s third quarter. In international markets, dealers sold 19,198 new Harley-Davidson motorcycles during the third quarter, an increase of 4.4 percent compared to the year-ago period.
Through nine months, worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 4.9 percent compared to the prior-year period to 194,829 units. U.S. retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 4.7 percent to 127,930 units through three quarters compared to the year-ago period. In international markets, retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles increased 5.2 percent to 66,899 units for the first nine months of 2011 compared to 2010. Through nine months, industry-wide U.S. heavyweight new motorcycle (651cc-plus) retail unit sales increased 3.7 percent, compared to the year-ago period.

Harley-Davidson Motorcycles and Related Products Segment Financial Results
Third-Quarter Segment Results: Revenue from Harley-Davidson Motorcycles during the third quarter of 2011 of $922.3 million was up 15.5 percent compared to the year-ago period. The Company shipped 61,745 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide during the quarter, compared to shipments of 53,293 motorcycles in the third quarter of 2010.
Revenue from Motorcycle Parts and Accessories (P&A) totaled $235.7 million during the quarter, up 7.6 percent, and revenue from General Merchandise, which includes MotorClothes Apparel and Accessories, was $69.3 million, up 8.2 percent compared to the year-ago period.
Gross margin was 33.7 percent in the third quarter of 2011, compared to 34.9 percent in the third quarter of 2010. Third-quarter operating margin was 14.7 percent, compared to 9.3 percent in the third quarter of 2010.
Nine-Month Segment Results: Through the first nine months of 2011, the Company shipped 182,387 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to dealers and distributors, a 9.9 percent increase compared to last year’s 166,013 units for the period.
Revenue from Harley-Davidson Motorcycles through nine months was $2.76 billion, a 13.2 percent increase compared to the year-ago period. Nine-month P&A revenue was $655.4 million, a 9.3 percent increase from the first nine months of 2010. General Merchandise revenue was $204.8 million, a 3.6 percent increase compared to the same period in 2010.
Gross margin through nine months was 34.0 percent and operating margin was 14.5 percent, compared to 35.5 percent and 11.8 percent respectively through nine months last year.

Financial Services Segment
The Financial Services segment recorded operating income of $62.0 million in the third quarter, compared to operating income of $50.9 million in the year-ago quarter. The increase in year-over-year operating income was largely the result of continued improvement in credit performance at Harley-Davidson Financial Services. Through nine months, operating income from financial services was $212.0 million, compared to operating income of $138.4 million in the first three quarters of 2010.

Guidance
Harley-Davidson continues to expect to ship 228,000 to 235,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to dealers and distributors worldwide in 2011, including 45,500 to 52,500 motorcycles in the fourth quarter.
For the full year, Harley-Davidson now expects gross margin to be between 33.5 percent and 34.5 percent, compared to previous guidance of 34.0 percent to 35.0 percent. The Company continues to expect capital expenditures of between $210 million and $230 million, which includes $70 million to $85 million to support restructuring activities.

Restructuring Update
Harley-Davidson has lowered cost estimates related to the restructuring of its production operations and now expects all previously announced company-wide restructuring activities to result in one-time charges of $480 million to $495 million, including 2011 charges of $70 million to $80 million. The Company continues to expect to realize savings on a cumulative basis in 2011 of $210 million to $230 million from restructuring activities initiated since early 2009, and annual ongoing savings of $305 million to $325 million when the restructuring is fully implemented. Through the first nine months of 2011, the Company incurred restructuring charges of $49.0 million, including $12.4 million in the third quarter. During the third quarter, Harley-Davidson completed the consolidation of final assembly operations at York, Pa. Final assembly of all Touring, Softail, Trike and Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) motorcycles now occurs on a single assembly line.

Income Tax Rate
Through nine months, the Company’s effective tax rate was 30.4 percent, compared to 34.0 percent in the year-ago period. The 2011 effective tax rate through the third quarter was favorably impacted by a settlement of an IRS audit, as well as a change in the Wisconsin income tax law associated with certain net operating losses. In 2011, the Company now expects its full-year effective tax rate from continuing operations to be approximately 31 percent.

Cash Flow
Cash and marketable securities totaled $1.61 billion at the end of the quarter, compared to $1.55 billion at the end of last year’s third quarter. During the first nine months of 2011, Harley-Davidson generated $901.6 million of cash from operating activities. In the first nine months of 2010, the Company generated $1.17 billion of cash from operating activities. Capital expenditures through the first nine months of 2011 were $106.1 million.

Share Repurchase
The Company repurchased 2.5 million shares of Harley-Davidson, Inc. common stock at a cost of $90.8 million during the third quarter of 2011. At the end of the third quarter, there were approximately 232 million shares of Harley-Davidson common stock outstanding and 22.4 million shares remaining on board-approved share repurchase authorizations.
